A man who was asked to babysit a couple’s infant child is now facing murder charges after officials said the child died in his care.
Cleveland County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in Kings Mountain on May 20, where a mother was performing CPR on her unconscious infant son, officials said.
The mother and her boyfriend had asked the man, 24-year-old Garrett Frederick to watch the child while they went to dinner.
When the couple came home 35 minutes later, Frederick told them something was wrong with the child, according to sheriff’s office.

Frederick hadn’t sought medical assistance for the child before the parents arrived, and fled the home before the sheriff’s office and medical personnel were called.
The child was taken to a hospital in Kings Mountain, where doctors found evidence of trauma-related injuries.
The infant died Tuesday morning in Charlotte from his injuries. Frederick was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with first degree murder.
“Anyone who would do this to an innocent, defenseless baby is an evil coward," sheriff Alan Norman said in a statement. "My faith tells me that he will have a day of reckoning in front of the Almighty, once his time on this earth is over. In the meantime, our detectives will put together a case that ensures he is held accountable to the laws of this state, and he will not be able to do this to any other defenseless victims."
Frederick was being held at the Cleveland County Jail on Wednesday with no bond, according to jail records.
He had warrants for his arrest in Buncombe County for probation violation, officials said.
